Why choose aluminum for the cast lamp holder cover?

In the design and production of outdoor lighting components, the choice of core materials determines the upper limit of the product's basic performance, while the setting of basic parameters directly affects its compatibility with lighting systems, production stability, and market compliance. Cast lamp holder covers, as key protective components for outdoor lighting, primarily use A356 aluminum alloy as their core material, supplemented by flexible zinc alloy options, offering advantages in physical properties and process compatibility. Simultaneously, clearly defined basic parameters such as weight, tolerances, and production capacity ensure that the product can meet both bulk purchasing needs and adapt to different installation and usage standards in various scenarios.

The material selection for cast lamp holder covers is not singular or fixed, but rather based on the logic of "scenario requirements - performance matching - cost balance," forming a material system with A356 aluminum alloy as the standard model and zinc alloy as a customized model. Both materials are suitable for gravity casting processes, but they have differentiated advantages in mechanical properties, weather resistance, and applicable scenarios, meeting the core needs of different users.

Standard Core Material: A356 Aluminum Alloy (compliant with ASTM B179 Standard)

A356 aluminum alloy is one of the most widely used aluminum alloys in the global casting industry. Its composition and structural characteristics perfectly match the outdoor use requirements of cast lamp holder covers, and it is also the mainstream choice for Rongbao Casting for this product. Its core advantages are reflected in three aspects: composition design, performance, and process adaptation:

Composition Design: Taking into account both casting performance and mechanical strength

According to ASTM B179 (American Society for Testing and Materials Standard for Casting Aluminum Alloys), the core components of A356 aluminum alloy are silicon (Si: 6.5%-7.5%), magnesium (Mg: 0.3%-0.45%), and the rest are aluminum (Al: margin) and trace impurities (iron ≤ 0.2%, copper ≤ 0.1%, manganese ≤0.1%). The key role of this composition ratio is:

High silicon content improves casting fluidity: silicon can reduce the melting point of aluminum alloys (about 577°C, lower than 660°C of pure aluminum), and increase the fluidity of molten metal, so that it can fully fill the complex cavities of lamp base covers (such as internal junction ducts, sealing grooves) during gravity casting, avoid porosity, shrinkage and other casting defects, and ensure the structural integrity of the product.

Magnesium element strengthens mechanical properties: Magnesium and silicon will form an Mg₂Si reinforced phase after casting, and after T6 heat treatment (solution treatment + artificial aging), the tensile strength of A356 aluminum alloy can reach 290MPa, the yield strength can reach 240MPa, and the hardness (HB) can reach 80-90, which is enough to withstand the installation load of outdoor lamps (such as the weight of the lamp, wind impact), and will not cause plastic deformation due to long-term stress.

Performance Characteristics: Suitable for Various Outdoor Environments

The physical properties and chemical stability of A356 aluminum alloy directly determine the weather resistance and durability of cast aluminum lamp base covers, which are manifested in:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance: The alloy will naturally form a dense oxide film (Al₂O₃) in the air, with a thickness of about 5-8μm, which can block the contact between moisture and oxygen and the matrix, and can resist mild corrosion without additional coating in the conventional environment. With shot peening, anodizing and other surface treatments, it can pass the salt spray test (ASTM B117 standard) for more than 1000 hours, suitable for humid and dusty outdoor scenes.
  • Good thermal conductivity and temperature resistance: The thermal conductivity of A356 aluminum alloy is 150-170W/(m・K), which is 3-4 times that of ordinary cast iron, which can quickly conduct the heat generated during the operation of the lamp and avoid the internal temperature of the lamp holder. At the same time, its use temperature range covers - 30°C to 150°C, will not be brittle and cracked at low temperatures, and will not soften and deform at high temperatures, adapting to the long-term operation needs of high-power LED lamps (above 100W).
  • Lightweight advantages: The density of A356 aluminum alloy is about 2.68g/cm³, which is only 1/3 of steel, and the weight of the cast aluminum lamp base cover is 40%-50% lighter than that of steel lamp holder cover under the same size, which not only reduces the overall weight of the lamp (reduces the load-bearing pressure of the lamp pole), but also facilitates on-site installation (one person can handle and operate).

Process Compatibility: Perfectly Compatible with Gravity Casting

The cast lamp holder cover is produced using gravity casting, and the characteristics of A356 aluminum alloy are highly compatible with this process:

Low Shrinkage: The casting shrinkage rate of this alloy is approximately 1.2%-1.5%, far lower than that of zinc alloy (2.5%-3%). The dimensional accuracy of the cast product is easily controlled, and tolerance requirements can be met without extensive subsequent processing;

Low Impurity Sensitivity: Its composition has a high tolerance for impurities (such as iron and copper). Even if the raw materials contain trace amounts of impurities, it will not significantly affect the casting quality, reducing raw material procurement costs and production quality control difficulties.

Customized material: Zinc alloy (Zn-Al-Cu system)

For scenarios with higher requirements for mechanical strength and surface accuracy (such as heavy-duty outdoor lamps and high-end commercial lighting), cast lamp holder covers can provide zinc alloy customization options, with Zn-Al-Cu ternary alloys (such as ZA-8, ZA-12 models) at the core, and its performance characteristics and applicable scenarios are as follows:

Higher mechanical strength: Zinc alloy has a tensile strength of up to 320-380MPa and a yield strength of 280-320MPa, both of which are better A356 aluminum alloy, which can withstand greater loads (such as large landscape lights with an installation weight of more than 15kg), and the impact resistance (IK09 rating) is slightly higher than that of cast aluminum models, making it suitable for collision-prone scenarios (such as commercial pedestrian streets, park squares).

Better surface finish: Zinc alloy has stronger molten fluidity than A356 aluminum alloy, and the surface roughness (Ra) can be as low as 1.6μm after casting, and the mirror effect can be achieved without complex polishing.

Applicable limitations: The density of zinc alloy (about 6.8g/cm³) is 2.5 times that of A356 aluminum alloy, and the weight increases significantly under the same size (for example, the weight of the zinc alloy model is about 2.2kg, which is 2.5 times that of the aluminum model), which will increase the weight bearing and installation difficulty of the lamp pole; At the same time, its corrosion resistance (especially salt spray resistance) is weak
